About Enzy

Enzy is the performance operating system for sales teams, built for field and door-to-door sales organizations and other distributed teams. As Enzy has grown, its pricing has evolved from a primarily flat-fee subscription model to include usage-based charges tied to additional users, signed documents, and other product activity. That flexibility has become increasingly important as Enzy explores new AI products and the usage costs associated with them.

The Challenge: Finance Work Impeded a More Flexible Business Model

Before moving to Tabs, Enzy used QuickBooks for invoicing. The company began looking for a more automated way to ingest contracts and support a growing amount of usage-based billing. By the time Tanner Shelton joined as Enzy’s first full-time finance hire, Tabs was already in place, but several parts of the billing workflow still required manual intervention. Contracts had to be uploaded and reviewed, first invoices had to be sent manually, and contract changes could require integrations to be set up again.

That manual work needed to be automated because Enzy’s pricing was becoming more dynamic. The company wanted the freedom to introduce usage-based charges and experiment with new contract structures without creating a large operational burden for finance. Tanner had seen elsewhere how billing complexity could require entire teams simply to keep invoices accurate and on schedule.

“The number one thing is time. For us, it’s really about not having to have someone in the loop for every step of the process.”

— Tanner Shelton, Finance and Accounting Manager, Enzy

The finance roadblocks Tanner was looking to solve were end-to-end:

  • Contract ingestion and billing automation: Contracts still required manual upload, review, and first-invoice setup before billing could move forward.
  • Usage-based billing infrastructure: Enzy needed a billing workflow that could easily ingest usage data as its pricing model expanded beyond flat subscriptions.
  • Collections automation: The team was still relying on aging reports and spreadsheets to identify overdue accounts and manage outreach.
  • Reconciliation and variance analysis: Investigating discrepancies across billing and ERP data could require hours of manual, line-by-line review.

Why Tabs: An Automated Finance Workflow Built Around Agents

Enzy’s leadership chose Tabs primarily for its ability to handle dynamic, usage-based invoicing. Tabs also stood out for saving time through AI contract ingestion and automated invoice creation, and for its integration with Avalara to handle sales tax correctly.

Enzy has steadily expanded how much of its finance operation runs through Tabs. Contracts can now flow into Tabs automatically when they’re signed. Tabs reads the contract, creates the invoice, and can charge the customer using payment information captured during signing. Usage data can also flow directly into Tabs, giving Enzy the infrastructure to support more flexible pricing without rebuilding its billing process every time the commercial model changes.

That flexibility has changed how Tanner and the broader team think about pricing decisions. The question is increasingly what Enzy wants to offer customers, because the finance team is confident Tabs can support the operational side.

“What can we do with Tabs? Anything we want. It makes it super flexible. The question is really, ‘How do we want to do it with Tabs?’”

Contract Agent reduces the need for manual contract review

Tabs Contract Agent has helped Enzy automate one of the earliest steps in the billing workflow. The team has trained the agent to understand where key information appears in Enzy’s contracts and how its contract language should be interpreted.

Once calibrated, Contract Agent could extract the information finance needs consistently enough that the team now only spot-checks most incoming contracts.

“It took some work to get the agent dialed in, but now we only spot-check most contracts that come in. It’s really accurate.”

Instant contract-to-cash gets customers billed almost immediately

Enzy has also connected contract signing with payment collection. When a customer signs and enters their payment information, the contract is pushed into Tabs and interpreted automatically. Tabs can then generate the invoice and charge the customer.

Tanner estimates that a customer can now move from signing to being billed roughly a minute later. Collecting payment information upfront has also helped Enzy address one of its biggest collections problems by increasing customer commitment at the start of the relationship.

“Collecting payment info upfront has basically solved 90% of problems. Our DSO was around 45 days, and now it’s gone down to seven.”

— Tanner Shelton, Finance and Accounting Manager, Enzy

Collections Agent helps finance focus on the accounts that need attention

Before using Tabs for collections, Enzy relied on spreadsheets and aging reports to determine which customers needed follow-up. Collections Agent now surfaces the accounts that need attention and can recommend emails for Tanner’s team to send.

Automated payment reminders and agent-generated outreach have reduced the amount of manual work required to manage exceptions, such as declined payments or customers who need to update their billing information.

MCP turns reconciliation into an agent-assisted workflow

The Tabs MCP has become part of Tanner’s day-to-day finance workflow. Because Tanner can work across Tabs and Enzy’s ERP through the Tabs MCP, he can investigate discrepancies without manually comparing records one by one.

Instead of spending hours finding the source of a variance, Tanner can use the Tabs MCP to work through the underlying data for him.

“I use MCP all the time. Mainly with my RevRec, or if I’m looking at variances. Just today I’ve used it four times.”

Life With Tabs: Finance Is No Longer the Constraint on How Enzy Wants to Sell

With more of the contract-to-cash process automated, Enzy has reached what Tanner describes as a much steadier state. Finance can spend less time checking whether customers were billed correctly and more time on the exceptions that genuinely require attention.

The biggest impact is flexibility. Enzy can explore new pricing structures without worrying that billing and operations will hold the business back. Tanner has worked at companies where introducing a new contract structure could trigger weeks of operational planning and require several people to adjust invoices manually. At Enzy, the team can focus on deciding how it wants to price because Tabs gives finance confidence that it can execute.

“Anything we want to do, we can try. If we’re going to set a new contract or anything, I’m not worried if we’ll be able to do it logistically. We’ll be able to within Tabs.”— Tanner Shelton, Finance and Accounting Manager, Enzy

The impact includes:

  • DSO dropped from roughly 45 days to 7 days after Enzy began collecting payment information upfront and improving its collections workflow.
  • Upfront payment collection has resolved most of Enzy’s previous collections issues, leaving the team to focus on a much smaller set of exceptions.
  • Customers can move from signed contract to billing in about a minute through Enzy’s automated contract-to-cash workflow.
  • New pricing models are easier to operationalize, giving Enzy room to expand beyond flat subscriptions into usage-based pricing without building a larger manual billing operation.

For Tanner, the next step is to push that automation even further. His goal is for Collections Agent to eventually handle routine outreach with minimal approval from finance, while Tabs takes on more of Enzy’s revenue recognition workflow as well.
